Google’s Gemini coworker-agent architecture separates the durable institutional agent from the model underneath it. A coworker can hold its own Workspace identity, email, calendar, storage, permissions, and audit trail while model choice changes beneath it. exmxc formalizes the shift with Agent Continuity Gate v1.0.

The Signal

Google’s October 8 Gemini at Work launch moves the enterprise agent beyond persistent execution into durable institutional identity. A Gemini coworker agent can receive its own Workspace account, email address, calendar, Drive, and company-directory presence. It acts under its own identity rather than impersonating the employee who created it, and its permissions follow ordinary enterprise sharing and membership controls.

The architectural break is equally important: Gemini is the agent; the model underneath it is a replaceable component. Google says the agent can route work across Gemini and Anthropic models while its context, skills, and data remain in place.

That creates a new institutional possibility: the agent can outlive the model.

Relationship to Standing Mandate

exmxc’s Delegation Persistence Ladder defined Standing Mandate as durable authorization for an agent to pursue an objective across time and connected systems without requiring the user to reissue intent every work cycle.

OpenAI Dots established persistent responsibility. Google now adds persistent organizational identity and explicit model substitutability. Together, these developments move Standing Mandate from a one-platform signal toward a cross-platform architectural pattern.

Agent Continuity Gate v1.0

Object type: decision framework. As of: October 13, 2026. Question: when does an AI agent become a durable institutional actor rather than a temporary model session?

An agent clears the gate only when all six conditions are materially present:

  1. Role persistence: the agent retains a defined responsibility across sessions and changing assignments.
  2. Independent identity: actions are performed under an agent identity rather than borrowed human credentials.
  3. Persistent context: relevant memory, skills, and work history survive individual sessions.
  4. Authorization continuity: permissions and policy boundaries persist and remain governable over time.
  5. Audit continuity: actions can be attributed to the same agent across tools, systems, and execution environments.
  6. Model substitutability: the underlying model can change without destroying the agent’s institutional role, identity, or working context.

Decision rule: persistence alone creates a long-running assistant. Identity plus auditability creates an accountable agent. Model substitutability creates institutional continuity.

Current read: Google’s coworker-agent architecture appears to satisfy all six at the product-architecture level, although broad production adoption and long-duration operating evidence are not yet established.

Why Model Substitutability Matters

If the model and the agent are the same object, every major model migration risks becoming an institutional reset. If the agent is a persistent identity whose intelligence substrate can change, the organization can preserve permissions, memory, role, audit history, and workflow ownership while upgrading the cognition underneath.

This separates two things the market often conflates:

model identity ≠ agent identity

The model becomes replaceable intelligence infrastructure. The agent becomes the durable organizational actor.

Four Forces Interpretation

Interface — Primary Force Activated

The interface no longer only mediates a user’s access to intelligence. It can instantiate persistent coworkers that occupy organizational surfaces directly: email, calendar, storage, chat, directories, and applications.

Alignment — Identity Makes Agency Governable

Persistent agency requires persistent control. Google pairs agent identity with least-privilege permissions, cryptographic attestation, auditing, sandboxes, and an Agent Gateway enforcing policy across traffic.

Compute — Models Become Swappable Substrate

Compute and models remain essential, but institutional continuity moves above them. The organization can change the model underneath an agent without rebuilding the agent itself.

Energy — Secondary

Persistent agents create durable inference demand, but this development does not independently change Energy doctrine.

Implication for the Agent Layer Framework

Agent Continuity should not become a seventh layer. It is a cross-cutting property spanning Identity, Orchestration, and Trust: identity preserves who the agent is; orchestration preserves what it can do; trust and audit preserve accountability for what it did.

Promote Agent Continuity into stronger canonical doctrine if multiple independent enterprise-agent ecosystems demonstrate durable identity, auditable authorization, and model substitutability in production over time.

Limitations

Google’s architecture is newly announced. Product design establishes the control model, but not yet long-run operating reliability, adoption, or economic value. The Agent Continuity Gate is therefore a Signal-level decision framework, not a validated maturity index.
