Answer Gap
The Answer Gap is the traffic value a content owner loses to AI answers, minus the licensing value it receives in return. When an AI system answers a question directly, the click that used to reach the source disappears. Licensing deals were supposed to make up the difference. So far they have not.
The gap moves in three stages:
- Traffic breaks. Referral clicks from search fall first.
- Monetization masks. The owner raises revenue per user to offset fewer users, so total revenue can keep growing while the audience shrinks.
- Revenue breaks. When gains per user can no longer offset the user decline, revenue follows.
Reddit's third quarter of 2026 is the first clear case of stage one. U.S. daily users fell from the prior quarter as AI tools answered queries that used to send search visitors, while licensing remained around 5% of revenue. Revenue per U.S. user rose 53% in the same quarter: the mask.
Search engines face the same gap from the other side. An AI answer replaces a page of ad-bearing links with a single response, which leaves less to monetize per query at a higher cost to serve. That link is an exmxc inference, not a company disclosure.
The Answer Gap Test measures a content owner's exposure on five dimensions: referral dependence, traffic break, licensing coverage, monetization mask and posture response.
