Amazon hasn't ranked first once in three rounds of AI shopping answers

Amazon came in last of the four every round. It ranked first zero times... not once. When it did show up, it was almost always #3 to #5.

We asked four major AI assistants the same everyday shopping questions... 13 questions, three times each, 156 answers per round. Then we counted which retailers made each top-five list.

On the eight questions where Walmart, Costco, Target and Amazon were all fair answers, here's how often each one showed up (rounds 1, 2 and 3):

Walmart... 69.8%, 71.9%, 70.8%
Costco... 61.5%, 61.5%, 63.5%
Target... 51.0%, 45.8%, 50.0%
Amazon... 37.5%, 32.3%, 28.1%

Amazon came in last of the four every round. It ranked first zero times... not once. When it did show up, it was almost always #3 to #5.

On timing... round 1 ran Oct 7. Rounds 2 and 3 ran back to back on Nov 3 and 4, so round 3 is a repeat check, not a new point on a trend.

These are counts from our own questions and sessions, not a measure of what shoppers buy. The full data is open on GitHub.

Next up... a separate study, locked in before any data comes in, will look at which sources these assistants cite when they recommend a retailer.
